Paul emphatically discouraged believers from displaying or boasting about their own righteousness. For the Jews, circumcision was a significant ritual, symbolizing their identity as God's chosen people. However, Paul shifted the emphasis away from circumcision or uncircumcision, highlighting instead the importance of one's identity in Christ as a new creation, made possible through the blood of Jesus Christ.
The Jews were preoccupied with physical circumcision rather than the circumcision of the heart. While circumcision was meant to be a sign of their commitment to fully observe the Law, in practice, the Jews did not uphold the Law. Instead, they sought to demonstrate their righteousness through a few ceremonial actions that were within their capability.
This mindset persists today. Many individuals have undergone baptism but show little interest in adhering to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Similarly, there are many who participate in Sunday worship services without genuine devotion to God. Consequently, conflicts arise even within the context of worship. Outside of religious activities within the church, there is often no discernible difference between those who have been baptized and those who have not.
Paul took pride in the "marks of Jesus"—the scars he bore from the suffering he endured while proclaiming Christ, such as those from beatings and stonings. In contrast, many modern Christians tend to boast about worldly success and share testimonies of material prosperity. Although Paul lived in the world, he considered himself crucified to it and was wholly devoted to seeking God's kingdom and righteousness. In contrast, today's Christians often continue to pursue worldly blessings and recognition.
Many people seek emotional experiences and inspiration in worship and find satisfaction in crowded churches, yet the path of Jesus' disciples was marked by loneliness and suffering. Jesus Himself was crucified. The revival described in scripture is not characterized by large gatherings, but by each believer losing themselves in Christ, clothing themselves in Him, and following His example throughout their lives. Therefore, believers have nothing to boast about except for Jesus Christ.
