Paul's priority is not life and death. Being with Jesus was the greatest joy for him, whether he lived or died, because preaching Jesus was his reason and purpose in life. Although Paul could have done more for the church and shared the gospel with people, his greatest desire was to leave the world and live fully with Christ.
Paul wanted to focus on Jesus instead of himself. This is why Paul did not boast about what he had done, but rather shared what Christ had done through him. As a man of God, Paul aspired to live for Jesus, in Jesus, by Jesus, and with Jesus. Paul had no meaning in the world without Jesus, and the hardships he faced while preaching the gospel were too painful to bear, but he was content and grateful for Christ.
However, Paul was not a perfect being who could please only God. Although Paul depended solely on Jesus, the sinful nature within him caused him to lament. Instead of glossing over or rationalizing his sinful nature, Paul acknowledged his weakness and engraved the meaning of Christ Jesus' precious blood in his heart, praying for God's grace.
