The desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life, not to speak of money, keep people away from God (1Ti6:10;1Jn2:16). Many in the world succumb too easily to the temptations and tests of today's era. In the Bible, Satan or the devil is referred to as "the god of this world" [ὁ θεὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος], as written in 2 Corinthians 4:4. Satan blinds the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot understand the gospel. Moreover, the age in which we live is ruled by the prince of the power of the air and is full of evil, and pursues the desires of the flesh and the desires of people which are opposed to the will of God (Gal1:4;Eph2:2-3).
Satan, who opposes the will of God and prevents humans from understanding the gospel of Jesus Christ, is described in the Bible as “the abomination of desolation”(Da11:31;12:11;Mt24:15), “the man of lawlessness, the son of destruction”(2Th2:3), “a beast”(Rev13:1), “Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent”(Isa27:1), “the tempter”(Mt 4:3;1Th3:5), “the prince of demons”(Mt9:34), “Beelzebul”(Mt12:24,27), “the evil one”(Mt13:19), “the enemy”(Mt13:39), “a liar”(Jn 8:44), “the father of lies”(Jn8:44), “a murderer”(Jn8:44), “the ruler of this world”(Jn12:31), “Belial”(2Co6:15), “the cosmic powers over this present darkness”(Eph6:12), “the one who has the power of death”(Heb2:14), “Abaddon or Apollyon, the angel of the bottomless pit”(Rev9:11), “a great red dragon”(Rev12:3), ancient serpent(Rev12:9), and “the deceiver of the whole world”(Rev12:9).
Just as God exists, Satan or the devil also exists. From the beginning to the end of human history, Satan shows his power to the world to the extent allowed under God's absolute sovereignty, legalizing and generalizing unrighteous things that deviate from God's words, and keeping people in an unrighteous state (1Co6:9-10). Therefore, believers who confess Jesus as the Christ must not be affected by temptations, tests, the trend of thought in the world, not only in the era of persecution but also today. Also, they must enter through the narrow door, and undergo tribulations as a result of standing against the schemes of the devil (Mt7:13;13:21;Lk13:24;Jn16:33;Ac14:22;Ro12:12;Eph6:11-12;1Pe5:8). However, since we can do nothing by ourselves, we must rely completely on Jesus Christ alone and receive the holy guidance of the Holy Spirit (Jn14:26;16:13). So we pray (Mk9:29), but we are so weak that the Holy Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words (Ro8:26). Indeed, being able to pray itself is the grace of God, and nobody can truly pray without the grace of God.
